Gleason pitches and Hanson powers Athletics to state tournament victory

The Delano Athletics opened state tournament play with a 2-1 victory over the Sleepy Eye Indians on Saturday afternoon in Watkins.

Runs were at a premium as wind gusts exceeded 30 miles per hour. Athletics starting pitcher Jake Gleason kept tossed six innings, giving up no runs. Sleepy Eye starting pitcher, Sean Mathiowetz limited the Athletics to just six hits and one run and his way out of several jams, including a one out bases loaded jam. The Athletics left 10 runners on base in the game.

The first run of the game was scored in the bottom of the fourth inning when Trevor Jaunich led of the inning by taking one for the team with a hit by pitch. Jaunich advanced to second on a successful sacrifice bunt by Jay Stevens. Jesse Berg singled to advance Jaunich to third. With runners at the corners, Jeff Althoff came to the plate and reached safely while scoring Jaunich from third base on a fielders choice groundball.

With the Athletics clinging to a one run lead in the seventh inning, Toby Hanson stepped to the plate with one out and ripped a home run over the right field fence and provided the Athletics with an insurance run and the Athletics led 2-0 after seven innings.

The Athletics would survive a late rally from Sleepy Eye when they cut the lead to one run in the ninth inning, but with a few tremendous defensive plays from Jay Stevens at second base and Adam Schleper at shortstop the Athletics escaped with 2-1 first round victory in the Minnesota Class C state amateur baseball tournament.

In relief, Trevor Jaunich picked up a three inning save for the Athletics. Jaunich gave up one run on three hits.

The Athletics next game will be Saturday, Aug. 29 at 5:00 p.m. in Watkins versus the New London-Spicer Twins.

A Family Affair: Delano Continues Season at State Tournament

Delano is returning to the tournament for a 2nd consecutive season and will be making their 21st overall appearance. Last season the Athletics were eliminated in the first round with a 3-2 loss to the Luverne Redbirds.

The Athletics return a strong nucleus of young talent and are flooded with family ties. Trevor Jaunich will be making his first appearance in the state tournament for the Athletics.

Jaunich, the starting shortstop/closer for the Athletics, recently completed his senior season at North Dakota State University where he was a four-year relief pitcher for the Bison. Jaunich rejoined the team in 2015 after spending the last few summers in college wood bat leagues.

Jaunich is no stranger to baseball in Delano; he joins his cousins Kevin and Adam. Kevin Jaunich is the starting centerfielder for the Athletics. Trevor also has been reunited on the diamond with his father, Paul Jaunich who is the Athletics assistant coach. Paul was a starter on the 1988 Class C state championship team in which he played alongside his brothers, Tom and Dave.

In addition the Jaunich's, starting catcher Joey Althoff plays alongside his older brother Jeff Althoff, the Athletics starting right-fielder. Joey leads the Athletics with 38 RBIs and Jeff leads the team with 15 stolen bases.

I guess it begs to question. Who does all the laundry?

The Delano Athletics will continue their season on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. when they travel to Watkins to begin the first round of the Minnesota Class C state amateur baseball tournament versus the Sleepy Eye Indians.

Athletics fall flat in 13-3 loss to Howard Lake

With the Region 12C championship on the line in winner take all game, the Delano Athletics lost to the Howard Lake Orphans on Sunday afternoon at Delano Municipal Baseball Park.

The Orphans jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning and added three more runs in the second inning by way of walks and errors to take a commanding 5-0 lead. Howard Lake would score another run in the third inning to extend their lead to 6-0.

The Athletics would begin to chip away at the lead in the fifth inning when Joey Althoff ripped a line drive up the middle with the bases loaded to score a pair of runs and cutting the Orphans lead to 6-2.

Trevor Jaunich would cut the Orphans lead in half with a solo home run to begin the sixth inning. The Orphans responded in the bottom of the sixth inning with a run and maintain a 4-run lead, 7-3.

The Orphans continued to pile runs on, as the Athletics bullpen gave up a run in the seventh and five more runs in the eighth, before the game was called by way of the ten-run rule, 13-3.

With the loss, the Athletics will be the #2 seed in the upcoming Minnesota state amateur baseball tournament. Delano will play its first game on Saturday, August 22 at 1:30 p.m. in Watkins, versus either Sleepy Eye or Springfield from Region 2C.

In the postgame draft, the Athletics selected Todd Fuller (Maple Lake), Chad Raiche (Maple Lake), and Connor Kern (Hutchinson).

Athletics hold on for 12-9 over Howard Lake

The Delano Athletics moved closer to securing a #1 seed from Region 12C for the upcoming Minnesota state amatuer baseball touranment with a 12-9 victory over the Howard Lake Orphans on Friday evening.

Delano jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning with 3 hits. Kevin Jaunich led off with a single and advanced to second on an error. Toby Hanson grounded out to second base and advanced Jaunich to third and Joey Althoff followed up with an RBI single, scoring Jaunich.

The Athletics would score another run in the second inning to take a 2-0 lead when Joey Althoff returned to the plate with his second RBI single of the game.

Howard Lake would rally in the third inning and take a 3-2 lead, but Delano responded with five runs in the top of the fourth inning off starting Howard Lake pitcher, Shane Khan to take a 7-3 lead.

The Athletics would add another run in the fifth inning to take 8-3 lead when Toby Hanson drew a lead off walk and stole second base. Joey Althoff drove Hanson in with his third RBI single of the evening.

The Orphans chipped away at the Athletics lead in the sixth with a pair of runs and cut the lead to 8-5.

In the seventh inning, the Athletics would score again in the top of the sixth and seventh innings to take a 10-5 lead.

In the bottom of the eighth inning the Orphans came storming back with a 4-run rally, keyed by a 3-run homerun by Eric Schreifels and cut the Athletics lead to 10-9, before closer Trevor Jaunich came into the game to shut the door for his first save of the postseason, pitching the final out of the eighth inning and a scoreless ninth inning. Jaunich got a little cushion when the Athletics plated a pair of runs in the top of the ninth to take a 12-9 lead.

The Athletics are now one win away from securing the #1 seed and will play next again on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at Delano Municipal Baseball Park.

Athletics punch ticket to state tournament

Welcome back.

For a second straight season the Delano Athletics are returning to the Class C Minnesota state amateur baseball tournament.

The Athletics (21-9) secured a spot to state with a 7-2 win over the Maple Plain Diamond Devils Saturday afternoon in the Region 12C baseball tournament.

Though the Athletics secured a spot in the state tournament, they will continue regional play on Friday, August 14 versus the Howard Lake Orphans at 7:30 p.m. at Delano Municipal Baseball Park. Delano will be playing for state tournament seeding, and will be looking at securing the number one overall seed from the region.

Delano got things started early as they have often this season jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Kevin Jaunich led off with a walk and Toby Hanson singled to right field and Jaunich advanced to third on a hit-and-run. Joey Althoff hit a sacrifice fly to left field scoring Jaunich from third. John Magee singled to right advancing Hanson to third. and Trevor Jaunich singled to score Hanson.

Delano maintained a 2-0 lead through six innings while starting Athletics pitcher Jake Gleason was cruising and kept the Diamond Devils in check, however, with 2-outs in the top of the sixth inning Maple Plain would rally to tie the game 2-2.

In the bottom of the sixth the Athletics would bounce back to regain the lead with a five run outburst, keyed by a triple by John Magee that plated a pair of runs.

Gleason picked up the win for the Athletics on the hill, tossing 6 1/3 innings, giving up two runs on six hits. In relief, Matt Arens returned to the mound after missing four weeks with a upper body injury and was effective. Arens pitched 2 2/3 innings and gave up only one hit.

Offensively the Athletics were led by Magee, who finished the game, 3-4 with 2-RBIs.

The state amatuer baseball tournament begins August 21, hosted by Cold Spring and Watkins.

Region 12C Tournament: Athletics upend Loretto, 10-3

The Delano Athletics coasted to a 10-3 win over the Loretto Larks on Friday evening in the Region 12 amateur baseball tournament at Delano Municipal Stadium.

Delano got on the board first with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first. Kevin Jaunich led off with single and would later score on a single by John Magee. Trevor Jaunich doubled to score Magee and the Athletics would lead 2-0.

Loretto would cut the Athletics lead in half with a run in the second inning. The Larks would take a 3-2 lead in the top of third inning with a pair of runs off starting pitcher, Zach Iten.

Delano would score five runs in the third inning with a 2-out rally, led by RBI singles from Jay Stevens and Jeff Althoff.

Cody Mathisen picked up the win for the Athletics in relief of Iten. Mathisen pitched 2 1/3 innings, gave up two hits and struckout two. Troy Beckman was the losing pitcher of record for the Larks.

Delano will now play the Maple Plain Diamond Devils on Saturday, August 8 at 4:00 p.m. in a state tournament qualifying game at Delano Municipal Baseball Park.

Jesse Berg singles to win it for the Athletics in Extras

Jesse Berg singled home the winning run in the bottom of the 11th inning as the Athletics defeated the Hutchinson Huskies 5-4 on Sunday afternoon.

The Athletics scored first with a run scoring single by Trevor Jaunich in the third inning to take a 1-0 lead. The Huskies took the lead in the fourth inning with four runs, including a 3-run home run by Jake Wendland.

In his return to the Delano Athletics Toby Hanson would cut the Huskies lead in half, 4-2, with solo home run in the fifth inning. Hanson finished the game 2-for-3 with three walks, and three runs scored.

Trailing 4-2 in the bottom of the ninth inning the Athletics scored two runs to tie the game on a bases loaded walk and a wild pitch.

The Athletics used two pitchers in relief, Trevor Jaunich picked up the win for the Athletics scattering two hits in 4 1/3 innings of work.

Before the game the Athletics honored Jim and Peg Janzen for their years of service to the Delano Athletics baseball family. They were each presented with signed game balls from the 2015 team.

Athletics return from break with Sunday night win

After a few days off for the Delano Fourth of July celebration the Delano Athletics returned to the diamond hosting the Maple Plain Diamond Devils on Sunday evening at Municipal Baseball Park. Offensively, the Athletics struggles continued, managing just 6-hits against Maple Plain starting pitcher Pat Mcpherson.

The Diamond Devils put early pressure on the Athletics scoring pair of runs in the top of the first. The Athletics would tie the in the bottom of the first with 2-runs, including an RBI double by Trevor Jaunich.

The Athletics would take the lead in the second inning 3-2 when [Josh Hilter] scored on a wild pitch. The Athletics would score three more runs in the third inning on another RBI double by Trevor Jaunich and a pair of running scoring errors and wild pitches by the Maple Plain Diamond Devils.

Starting pitcher Jake Gleason picked up the win for the Athletics scattering 11-hits in 6 2/3 innings of work.In relief Cody Mathisen tossed 2 1/3 innings scattering one hit, and worked his way out of 1-out bases loaded jam in the ninth inning to end the game.

Offensively. Trevor Jaunich led the Athletics going 2-for-4 with pair of doubles and 2-RBIs. Despite scoring seven runs, only three of Delano's runs were earned.

Athletics rally late to defeat Mound

Athletics rally late to defeat Mound

The Delano Athletics rallied to beat the Mound Mallards 11-7 on Friday evening at Delano Municipal Baseball Park. Delano hosted, but Mound was the home team.

Mound led 7-6 before Delano tied the game with a run in the eighth and four runs in the top of the ninth inning.

Adam Schleper went 4 for 5 with three RBIs for Delano, Ryan Hayes went 2 for 4 with two RBIs, Trevor Jaunich went 3 for 4, and John Magee was 1 for 2 with two RBIs.

The Athletics faced an early deficit, falling behind 5-0 in the first inning. Tyler Hannan got his first start of the season and pitched two innings, giving up seven runs, while scattering seven hits.

Zach Iten picked up his fourth win of the season in relief for the Athletics. Iten allowed only one hit in six innings of work, while striking out eight.

Delano will travel to Watertown on Sunday evening for a league game at 6:00 p.m. versus Montrose.

Athletics capture third place at Cannon Falls Tournament

CANNON FALLS MN --For the majority of the weekend the Athletics played shorthanded and while patching together a lineup still came away with a pair of wins in the Josh Harrison Memorial Baseball Tournament.

On Sunday afternoon the Athletics defeated the Wanamingo Jacks 4-2 in the third place game behind a nice pitching performance by Jeff Althoff.

Althoff scattered six hits in five innings of work, giving up two runs and striking out five.

Offensively, John Magee hit his first homerun of the season with a 2-run shot that cleared the left-center-field fence in the fifth inning.

Trevor Jaunich picked up his third save of the season, striking out the side in the seventh.

Weekend Highlights:

The Eagan Bandits defeated the Metro Merchants in the championship game.
Pitcher, Zach Iten picked up his third win of the season with an opening round victory over Pine Island.
Joey Althoff was 4-for-10 at the plate with two doubles and an RBI.
John Magee hit his first homerun of the season and also his first for the Delano Athletics.
Trevor Jaunich picked up his third save of the season and was 3-for-7 at the plate.
Adam Schleper extended his hitting streak to 5 games and finished the tournament going 5-for-10.
